Cheyenne River Reservation

Lakota Oyate

The Cheyenne River Lakota Nation (Oyate) has faced a number of challenges over recent years. Unemployment remains high due to lack of industry on the reservation or available jobs in nearby towns. The children born into the tribe are faced with difficult living conditions which has resulted in feelings of hopelessness amongst the youth, and staggering suicide rates.

The Lakota Oyate, Our Nation, not for profit was formed to provide the youth of the reservation with outlets for their frustrations. Previous supporters installed a skatepark on the reservation in Eagle Butte, but equipment was in short supply, so kids were running up and down the ramps instead of skating. Lakota Oyate partnered with the local school and began providing skating equipment for the kids. Many of the children on the reservation have taken on the roles of a mentor, suicide prevention roles, and various other leadership positions in order to help heal their community. Through skateboarding, the Lakota Oyate strives to bring hope back into the community, raise awareness of the trials these kids and adults face, and be a part of creating sustainable positive change for the Lakota Tribe.

Leading up to the annual event on the reservation, the Lakota Oyate has partnered with Charity Made Simple to bring awareness to the issues these kids face, and help raise money for skate equipment, and push towards an ultimate goal of opening a skateboard company on the reservation.
